Mrs. Lovat (Grandmother)
Coraline Jones (Friend, possible girlfriend)
Wybie Lovat is one of Coraline's new neighbors when she moves, and the only kid around her new home. He is the only other one who knows about the "other world" that Coraline has visited. At first, Coraline's response to the boy is icy, but she later warms up to him. They have become friends by the end of the story.
Wyborne "Wybie" Lovat is introduced as the strange and friendly, albeit slightly awkward, 12-year-old grandson of Coraline's landlady, and Coraline's new neighbor when she moves. Though Coraline finds him creepy and regularly insults him, the two end up becoming good friends by the end of the movie. The Other Wybie has been rendered incapable of speech by the Other Mother as she thought Coraline would prefer him that way.
Although he was not featured in the book, Wybie was given a main role in the film adaption.
At the back door, Coraline Jones walks around exploring. Reaching an old tree stump and being startled by the Cat, she asks if he knows where an old well is. Obviously not getting an answer, she moves away and gets a huge shock from an air horn. Someone on a bike, wearing a helmet with a skull painted on it and a three-turret lens drives at her. After knocking her down he eventually removes his helmet asking about were she's from and quickly annoys Coraline by calling her Caroline and talking too much. He shows her she was standing on the well the whole time and moves several boards aside, showing it goes a long way down. He’s surprised that his grandma is letting her stay at Pink Palace, as most families with children were turned down for it. Wybie says the cat is sort of wild, but it clearly has affection for him. Hearing his Grandma calling, he gets on his bike and warns her that she should wear gloves next time, as the stick is poison oak.
Later, when Coraline is sent away to talk to the neighbors, she once again meets Wybie, who’s spying on her with that three turret lens, but when she catches him, he insists he was searching for banana slugs (which is what the helmet is for anyway). He says that he's never been inside Pink Palace because his Grandma's twin sister disappeared there and his grandmother thought she was stolen away. He then assumes that his great-aunt simply ran away but is called back to his grandmothers house before he could tell Coraline anything else.
Wybie also appears in the Other World, but has black button eyes and is mute because the Other Mother believes that a Wybie that cannot speak would be preferred by Coraline. He is generally friendly and tries to help Coraline escape, and communicates with the Cat, telling him about the Other Mother's true intentions (as stated by the Cat, even though the Other Wybie cannot speak, The Cat can still understand him). He is punished by the Other Mother, or the Beldam, for "pulling a long face," or frowning, (the Other Mother sews the ends of his mouth to make him permanently smile), but Coraline releases the stitches. The Other Wybie helps Coraline escape to her old world, but when Coraline tries to bring him with her, he shows his hand wich soon disintegrates, meaing that he was already done for. By the time Coraline returns to the Other World with The Cat in search of her kidnapped parents, Other Wybie's entire body has been disintegrated (as punishment from the Other Mother for helping Coraline escape).
After his grandmother discovers the Real Wybie gave Coraline the Little Me doll, his grandmother, recognizes the doll as the same one that her missing twin sister once had, only modified by the Beldam, and forces Wybie to ask Coraline for the doll. While Coraline searches for the doll, she tells Wybie about the Other World. Wybie is skeptical of the story and calls Coraline crazy, seemingly ending their friendship.
Later, after Coraline has escaped the Other World with the three ghost eyes, her parents in the snow globe, and the key intact, the severed hand of the Other Mother (cut off as the Other Mother attempted to pry open the door Coraline was trying to shut on her to escape) suddenly is animated and attempts to drag Coraline and the key to the house, where the Other Mother's hand will open the door and trap Coraline. Wybie saves Coraline by wrestling the hand away from her, dropping a large rock on it and breaking it, and throwing it (along with the rock and key) into the old well. His friendship with Coraline is repaired, and at the end of the movie, he and Coraline explain to his grandmother what happened to her missing sister (who was trapped by the Other Mother, but her soul was finally set free by Coraline when she found her ghost eye kept by the Other Mr.B).
